Fishes & Loaves mural
Location: Saint Mark Church & School, Venice, CA
Date of Completion: March 2026
Size: 300 sq ft mural
Created for Saint Mark Church and School as part of an ongoing collaboration, this mural reinterprets the biblical story of the loaves and fishes through a contemporary, mosaic-inspired visual language.
Drawing from Byzantine iconography, the composition preserves key symbolic elements—haloed figures, sacred gesture, and spiritual hierarchy—while translating them into a modern, geometric style. Fragmented planes of color echo traditional mosaic tesserae, allowing light, movement, and emotion to emerge across the surface.
The piece balances representation and abstraction, maintaining the clarity of the narrative while introducing a visual rhythm that feels alive and current. The figures are intentionally stylized yet grounded, inviting both recognition and reflection.
Developed with creative flexibility on site, the mural evolved into a more expressive and interpretive direction—resulting in a work that bridges historical reference with a contemporary aesthetic. The goal was to create something that resonates with both long-standing members of the parish and a new generation of viewers.
As part of a larger body of work exploring spiritual symbolism and public space, this mural reflects my approach to creating artwork that is both place-responsive and enduring.
