RENAISSANCE HOTEL GARMENT DISTRICT SCULPTURAL INSTALLATION
Location: Renaissance New York Midtown Hotel, Garment District, NYC
Date of Completion: 2015
Size: Custom, multi-panel sculptural installation
This sculptural installation was commissioned by the Renaissance Hotel (Marriott) for their flagship Midtown location in New York’s Garment District. Designed to serve as the signature focal point of their lobby’s DJ and entertainment area, the piece merges artistry with architectural functionality.
I created a bronze-like intertwining floral sculpture entirely by hand, using wood, steel, and Apoxie Sculpt to achieve a durable, dimensional form. Each element was meticulously shaped, carved, and finished with layered metallic paints to resemble aged bronze. The entire piece was sealed with a UV-resistant clear coat to ensure long-term preservation under lobby lighting and daily hotel traffic.
This project required detailed coordination with the millwork company fabricating the shelving system and the construction team completing the lobby buildout. Every component had to fit seamlessly within the custom shelving grid while maintaining structural integrity. I performed the full installation myself, ensuring that both the artistic vision and architectural fit were executed precisely.
In addition to the lobby centerpiece, I was commissioned to create a hand-painted wall of inspirational quotes for the hotel’s office level. I faux-finished the wall to resemble polished concrete and hand-painted the script typography directly onto the surface. I also designed and painted custom graphic symbols for the restroom doors on the same floor.
This body of work reflects my early integration of sculpture, faux finishing, and site-specific design—bringing a sense of elegance, craftsmanship, and identity to one of Marriott’s premier New York destinations. The installation remains on display today.
